Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III Overview
With the introduction of the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III, Canon was one of the first manufacturers to break through the 20 megapixel barrier bringing high performance and versatility to professional photographers. It is undoubtedly a very impressive piece of kit and caters for everything that can be thrown at it.
The Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III features:
- 21 MP full frame CMOS
- 14-bit A/D processing
- 5 fps, max. burst of 56 JPEGs
- Dual “DIGIC III” processors
- High precision wide area AF
- EOS Integrated Cleaning System
- ISO 100-1600 range (L:50 H:3200)
- 3.0″ LCD with Live View mode
- EF lens compatibility
Take a look in the box and you’ll typically find the EOS 1Ds Mark III Body, Eyecup, Wide Neck Strap, Video Cable, USB Interface, Interface Cable, Battery Pack, Battery Charger, Lithium Battery, AC Adapter Kit, Canon EOS Digital Solution Disk, and Digital Photo Professional Disk, Software Instruction Manual . Several kits are available that include various lenses.
There are several things that stand out with the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III:
- With batteries inserted and lens attached, the solidness of the unit is typical Canon high quality.
- Razor sharp photos almost a given when the correct focussing points are used.
- Weatherproofing is useful for many different climates.
- Focussing capability is spot on.
- Metering capability is spot on.
Using pre-set program settings the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III will do everything you ask of it. Switch to manual and there is a high degree of customisation available. In addition, custom dial options let you store your own settings which is great for when you’ve found a combination of settings that suit your photography style in certain situations, such as action shots.
To assist your creativity, the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III provides:
- 19 cross-type AF points (plus 26 Assist AF points).
- AF Modes: One Shot, AI Servo.
- AF Point Selection: Automatic selection, Manual selection, Home position (switch to registered AF point).
- TTL full aperture metering with 63 zone SPC.
- ISO Sensitivity: 100-1600 (in 1/3-stop or 1 stop increments) ISO can be expanded to L: 50 or H: 3200.
- White Balance Settings: Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten light, White Fluorescent light, Flash, Custom (5 settings), Colour Temperature Setting.
- Viewfinder Information: AF, Exposure, Flash, Image.
- Brightness Adjustable to one of seven levels.
- Flash Modes: E-TTL II Auto Flash, Metered Manual.
- Shooting Modes: Program AE, Shutter priority AE, Aperture priority AE, Manual.
- Drive Modes: Single, Silent, Continuous L, Continuous H, Self timer (2s, 10s)
- Continuous Shooting: Max. Approx.5fps. (speed maintained for up to 56 images (JPEG), 12 images (RAW)).
Compare Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III prices and you’ll find the body only option in the region of £5,000. The host of settings available makes this reassuringly heavy Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III a smart choice for professional photographers although for this sort of price a high definition screen would have been welcome.
