how did they make the original King Kong?

how did they make the scenes with King Kong and a person together in the same shot? Was King Kong a costume? A miniature model? How did they put the two together in the same shot back in the 1930s?

It is part of a process called “matting”. First the scenes with Kong and the dino are stop action photos. They use clay figures and position them. Take the picture and then change to objects position and take the next photo etc. They do this until they complete the actions they want.
With matting the film one object or scene with one camera and film the other item with another camera. Then the each film or image has a section blacked out where the other will appear. Then they projected the two sections of film at the same screen and a third camera then films the combined projections.
