Maintaining An Ideal Cholesterol Level
Whether you’re young or old, your health should be your top priority in life. Your diet and your lifestyle influence your overall health. Eating food filled with bad cholesterol and being inactive could lead to the most common cause of death in the world; heart attack. According to some statistics, more than 1 million people die because of heart attacks annually in the United States alone.
One of the best ways to lower the risk of heart attack is to keep a close eye on your cholesterol level. This can be easy for most but can be difficult for some, especially those with a family history of high cholesterol. At any rate, maintaining a clean lifestyle combined with proper diet and regular exercise will greatly reduce the risk of heart attack and high blood pressure. Here are a few tips to ensure a healthy lifestyle:
Proper diet
Stay away from food rich in trans fat and saturated fat. These are two most common sources of bad cholesterol found in food. Instead, eat food rich good cholesterols such as nuts and fish as well as food that help reduce bad cholesterol like oats, wheat and other food rich in fiber. You don’t have to turn vegan in order to avoid cholesterol; there are a number of ways to reduce cholesterol from meat. Remove the skin and fat in meats like poultry and pork and make sure you only buy lean red meat with as little fat as possible.
Exercise and work out
Weight loss and exercise boosts the level of HDL, or good cholesterol, in some people. At the same time, it also lowers the level of bad cholesterol in the blood. This prevents the risk of buildup in the arteries that results in clots responsible for heart attacks and stroke. Exercise makes full use of the energy in our body; energy that turns into fat if left unused.
Watch your cholesterol intake
While it’s almost impossible not to eat anything with cholesterol, you can ensure that you consume as little as possible. Consult your doctor or nutritionist; they might be able to provide you with a cholesterol chart. A cholesterol chart gives you a better idea how much cholesterol a certain food contains. Depending on your current health, your doctor or nutritionist should be able to give you a limit how much cholesterol you’re allowed to take daily. Use a cholesterol chart whenever preparing a meal or eating out in order to ensure that you don’t exceed that maximum level of cholesterol permitted for you.
Consult your doctor
Your doctor is your best partner when it comes to your health. You should schedule a regular check up so you can talk about your current health and the best way to improve it, if necessary. Your doctor will evaluate your blood pressure and using it as a reference, you should be able to formulate a health and diet plan. You may check your own blood pressure, but it would be better if you have the help of a doctor. Your doctor should also advise you when your cholesterol must be rechecked.
