What’s the difference between MSRP and invoice in relation to buying a car?
How likely is it to be able to buy a car at or below invoice? I have an idea on the difference, but was hoping someone would be able to clarify it for me in easy to understand terminology? Thanks.
MSRP is the retail price of the car that the manufacturer sets.
Invoice is the price of the car that the car dealer pays. However, there is often a refund from the factory to the dealer that does not show up on the invoice. Naturally, the dealer doesn’t tell you about this part.
Example: car lists for $25,000
Dealer invoice says $20,000
Dealer charges you $18,000 (“below invoice”)
Manufacturer is going to refund the dealer $5000. Thus, dealer has actually spent $15,000, when you think he has spent $20,000. Dealer has actually made $3000 on the deal.(Naturally, these examples were made up for easy math, not reflecting what’s actually going on.)
Consumer reports (www.ConsumerReports.com) explains this sort of thing periodically. I don’t know if the information is available on their website without a subscription, but you can always go to the library and look at back issues.
Also, watch the add-ons. The dealer will attempt to sell you clearcoat (you can buy a bottle for a few bucks), fabric protection (ditto for a spray can), undercoating (does little but deaden the noise). They make hundreds of dollars extra on those add-ons.
