what makes an ROTC officer and a West Point officer different without any prior enlisted experience?
I heard an officer from West Point gets a lot of respect as much as an officer who enlisted first but an officer who graduated from ROTC without any enlistment experience doesn’t. Also, is it possible to go to the academies after ROTC?
I served 9 years enlisted before getting commissioned through the ROTC “Green to Gold” program.
Honestly…your enlisted folks only see a 2nd LT. They could give two sh*t about where or how you got commissioned. All they see is a new butter bar and it is up to you to either prove or disprove all of their preconceived notions about 2nd LTs.
From my personal experience. Out of the 23 LTs (both 2nd and 1st LTs) in my first Battalion as an Officer, 1 was OCS, 5 were West Point and the rest were ROTC. 4 of the 5 West Point LTs were 100% of our disciplinary problems among the LTs (DUIs, drug use, etc) in my 4 1/2 years in the Battalion. By and large they are immature and don’t have the social skills gained by a normal college student because of the climate at West Point. And ALL of them were counting the days until their 5 year commitment was up so they could get out. That is my perspective.
