DIY – Offbeat Ways To Fix The Issues
When needing to fix your car, numerous DIY solutions may be available to you. Thankfully, Mike Allen of Popular Mechanics has a few offbeat auto fix-it ideas you are able to use.
First odd auto fix- Fuse box giving you issues
Allen tells of one driver who found himself stranded on a mountainside after his 4×4 all of a sudden died. A passerby with some automotive knowledge looked under the hood and paid specific attention to the fuse box. The passerby explains that swapping a fuse could work considering fuses in automotive boxes generally are alike. Each fuse is connected to a different electronic function of the car. The owner manual on hand will show which fuses connect with which functions. Intelligent drivers will already have this chart on their fuse boxes for emergencies like this. The traveler’s problem is that his fuel pump is dead. Switching this fuse from something unimportant to the fuel pump slot will solve all the problems.
Diet soda and eggs to help with radiator in offbeat solution 2
Got a problem with a hold inside your radiator? Allen suggests that eggs cracked into a radiator will solve the problem. Don’t use the overflow tank, but the actual radiator. You can temporarily fix the hole with the egg white sinking in. Try your drink if the fluid has gotten low in the radiator. Topping off with diet soda (without sugar to clog the water pump) helps. Other drinks you may use are beer and iced tea. Just don’t make a habit of topping off with Fresca.
Natural oil helps with tip number 3
Your automobile gets hurt when on bad roads. If rock meets oil pan, a hole and subsequent oil leak can be the result. The answer to your problem could be where the problem was created. The hole can be plugged, if you ask Allen, with a simple twig. Hammer it into the oil puncture after carving it into the shape you need. The problem can be fixed after cutting the rest of the stick off preventing it from catching on anything. If the hole drained the crankcase and also you need a top off, add some water. Allen explains, “The oil-pump pickup is not on the exact bottom – the remaining oil will float on top of the water”. Be cautious with this technique – it is only for emergencies. Adding more motor oil is always going to be the better choise.
Cleaning up a hole in the gas tank with number four
This is a variation on the last problem, but this time Allen discusses a hole within the gas tank. You’ve to be able to carve a chunk out of soap. Get to a mechanic as fast as you can after hammering that chunk in. If you need fuel to get out of there, it is not advisable to siphon gas like they used to in old “Dukes of Hazard” episodes. The only option you have when out of gas is pushing or leaving it.
