Team Building That Works
Team building used to mean your bosses taking sending somewhere like an outward bound facility for a weekend and making you compete against other members of staff in events that were utterly alien to you. The experience was execrable and the only effect was unification with your peers that you all resented the management who had put you through the experience.
The problem is that your team cohesion problems can’t be solved by team building events that take people out of their familiar environment and asking them to do things that they’re not comfortable with. Hosting your employees to luxuries that you would normally use as corporate hospitality are generally far more useful.Ask yourself, what would you prefer to do; pitch a tent on a windswept rainy field or spend an evening in your local? Historically the problem was that while the high-ups had a corporate ethos by which to work and core goals for the company everybody else who did the everyday labour was only there because it was their job and they had targets to reach. Management didn’t seem to be able to recognise this and would impose on their employees’ weekends by dragging them away from their homes and families in order to thrust them into situations where they would build trust and bond with one another.They couldn’t see that you can’t build trust in an environment that nobody trusts and everybody resents because it was an imposition upon their life outside work. The only thing the staff had in common was that they worked in the same room, now they were split into groups of people they didn’t know and made to compete against other people they didn’t know. Naturally a minimum of fifty percent of the staff will always be losers so the team building company spectacularly fails to engender a sense of unity and corporate cohesion.
