Motorcycles And The Military
A lot many of us would have seen a motorcyle on the road sporting the colors of the US Army. It could be a Harley Davidson or Truimph, but one cannot mistake its unmistakble Army markings. It could be a part of the Military Police or simply a Despatch rider.
Over the years the Armies of all countries have relied on the motorcycle to further their interests. The hey day of the motorcycle was during the Second World war when the US Army and the Wehermatch made extensive use of the bike as an instrument of war.
The Germans in particular adapted the machine as a part of their war arsenal. They equipped their bikes with a side car and mounted a machine gun on it. Thus the trooper sat in the side car with the cocked machine gun and used it effectively to terrorise the local population of occupied Europe.
The United States Army did not use the machine as a weapon in its arsenal but it made extensive use of the bike for communication duties and as a desptach rider and also for carrying hot meals to the trenches in the front line.
The bike proved its verstality in places where there was no roads and in inhospitable terrain. The German BMW bike earned a name for itself in all theatres of the second world war including the deserts of North Africa.Harley Davidson copied the BMW for operations in the North African Desert for the US Army. However the advent of the Jeep put an and to the use of the Bike for offensive operations.
Presently the Bikes are extensively used by all Armies of the world for cermonial and outriding duties.They are also the standard patrol vehicle for the Military Police . In addition the bike continues to be used as for communication and desptch rider duities.
The wheel has turned full circle and the bike is now a powerful ingradiant of all armies of the world. The Russians who copied the BMW and made their URAL to the Indian who have used the Royal Enfield the Bike is something no army can just forget.
