What is the best way to increase the number of push ups i can do?

I want to increase th enumber of push ups i can do. I’ve heard it takes 48 hours to heal your muscles. should i only be doing push ups every second day. I also go to the gym every second day to work on upper body. I am a 19 year old female. I can only do about 5 push ups as of now.
