what is the differnce between a i-vtec engine and a regular vtec engine?
i dont really get the difference still. even after reading up on the i vtec i dont know what the difference is.
They are actually both computer controlled.
The difference is the timing.
In an engine using VTEC, the computer simply changes the cam profiles between a high a low rpm range. Meaning if you are in low RPMs the valves only open sightly in order to have good gas mileage, then at high RPMs the valves open more to get more power while losing fuel efficiency.
In an engine using i-VTEC, RPM range doesnt matter. The engine has computer controlled adjustable cams on the intake side, capable of advancing and retarding the timing from 25 to 50 degrees. What this does is make the higher power cam profile engage if you are at low RPMs giving full throttle or heavy load.
So basically the i-VTEC gives the driver more power in the lower RPM range all the way through high RPMs while the VTEC only has a set VTEC engagement point.
